Air Force Colonel Rick MacIntyre (Scarecrow) crashes a Black Hawk helicopter in a terrible snowstorm when he's sent to rescue a team searching for stranded climbers. During the long cold night while waiting for someone to come to his aid, he is calmed by the constancy of the voice of Lily Atherton, who ran the radios and phones at SAR (Search and Rescue). Rick tells Lily he owes her dinner and asks her favorite - Italian. The bond between the two of them becomes more intense when the storm worsens and help won't be able to get to his location until morning. Lily decides to check on him every half hour during the night. When Rick is rescued and taken to the hospital, he wants to meet Lily, hold her hand, thank her, hear her voice some more, get to know the person who was there for him during that terrible night. Where will time lead these two?
The characters of Lily and Rick are quite extraordinary. Lily is one of those people you can count on in a crisis and she is well-suited for her job at SAR. During the day she works as a massage therapist at a rehabilitation center she owns. Rick is the Bravo team commander who loves fishing and telling jokes. He and his team are very tight because of all they have shared together. I loved these characters - all of them, especially Lily and Rick. There is so much life to all of them that they just leap off the pages. The story also does credit to everything related to heroes. This story is extraordinary, dangerous, involves some very courageous characters, and beautifully details the work of parajumpers, search and rescue teams and the Northern California area where their story takes place. I felt proud when I read about these characters and can't wait to read the other books in this series by Ms. Daniels.
