EVERY BREATH YOU TAKE by Judith McNaught

Kate Donovan’s father has passed away and she is faced with taking up his reins as a restaurateur. Kate and Evan, her long-time boyfriend, go on a vacation together but she is left alone in paradise when he is called away. Mitchell Wyatt is the prime suspect in the death of his half-brother. Mitchell was born on the wrong side of the blanket but he has become a powerful and rich man. Kate and Mitchell meet on a tropical island and sparks fly between them. It seems fate has put Kate and Mitchell together but fate can also rip them apart.

Mitchell and Kate are very similar to many of Ms. McNaught’s heroes and heroines. Mitchell is sexy, rich and a very much in control male. Kate is pretty, intelligent and a very nice girl. Kate and Mitchell also carry emotional baggage from their past which does affect their points of view. They are an engaging couple and there is magic when they first get together on the island.

The reader can split Every Breath You Take into two sections: before “the big misunderstanding” and after “the big misunderstanding”. The first half of the book was terrific. From the build-up of the relationship between Kate and Mitchell which includes the erotic tension that simmers between them. It was just delicious to watch them connect emotionally and sexually. Although it occurs over a very short time period, it gave this reader a taste of how great this book was going to be. Then “the big misunderstanding” happens and the story starts to falter. The characters that came across as quite intelligent on the front end of the story seem to lose a lot of their brain cells during the latter half of the book. Of course, if they only talked to each other then there wouldn’t be the conflict and the inevitable separation between them. By the time they got back together due to outside forces several years have passed by. Then the resolution was very abrupt and much too quick. Their differences are resolved, everything forgiven and the “happily ever after” is upon us. Every Breath You Take could have been a fabulous book from beginning to end unfortunately; the latter half was a tremendous let-down.
