Seven-year-old Missy Parker is loved by everyone in her community of Cat Lake. Her friend and champion is eleven-year-old Junior Washington. The differences in their lifestyles -- Missy is white, rich, and willful, Junior is black, poor, and a committed Christian -- do not stand in the way of their friendship and loyalty. One summer day in 1945, Junior’s loyalty and faith are proven in an extreme and horrifying way. He saves Missy’s life, but is more concerned for her soul.
As Missy matures, she learns lessons of love and faith through the sacrifices and encouragement of others, and discovers how to share her love and conviction.
The author is a gifted storyteller and he allows the reader to see both sides of the spiritual warfare taking place. He brings to life the post-WWII period in the south with vivid description and characterization. BLACK OR WHITE is Anderson’s debut novel and I look forward to his future work.
