Mary Ann and Brad are a settled, happily married couple of seven years.
They met in college. After Mary Ann started dating Brad, she met his
friend Robert. Robert has always intrigued Mary Ann. She finds herself
thinking about him, wondering if he’d like certain clothes or
activities. She has always wondered what life with Robert would be like.
But she’s never had the nerve to mention it to him. Mary Ann loves Brad.
He’s steady, dependable, and focused. He has worked hard and owns his
own very successful company. But he isn’t exciting anymore.
Every year Mary Ann and Brad vacation for a week with Robert and his current girlfriend. For some reason, Robert has never married, and rarely stays with anyone for very long. His current girlfriend, Crystal has lasted for a year, and Mary Ann can’t understand why. Mary Ann and Brad head to the Northern California coast for this year’s visit.
One morning, Mary Ann wakes up to find that she’s married to Robert. As she thinks back she realizes that one pivotal moment caused the change. Her life is totally different, and she herself is different in ways she couldn’t have expected.
I loved this book by Margo Reasner. The writing is crisp, interesting, and the plot is not typical at all. Everyone has moments when they wonder “What if”, and the way Margo Reasner handles this is fabulous. The back story feeds into the current events, and everything is wrapped up at the end in an unexpected twist.
I would like to give this novel the Reviewer’s Choice Award because it is so well-written, with excellent characterization, unusual plot and a fantastic ending that left me thinking about the book long after I finished it. Margo Reasner is now on my auto-buy list.
