The world is drastically altered after the Endless Wars, and now run by evil doers who mean harm to everyone but themselves. Especially corrupt is wicked Baron Alrod.
All hope is not lost, however: a few young warriors, Brady, Kendo and Nicki are brithrighters, sequestered in an Ark deep below the ice. These few are sent to save the new world from dark forces. Along the way they fight not just for their survival, but for the continued existence of humankind. These young warriors have only faith and trust to guide them and at times the journey and destination seems bleak and lost.
This fantasy/sci-fi story stands out because of the rich detail and delightfully frightening plot. Villagers are taken and ‘mogged’ (changed into) terrifying giant like creatures to be used in battles, these ‘gargants’, can sometimes still think rationally but cannot control the changes done to their bodies and minds. Equally awful are the villagers taken and have beautification things done to them, so they can be given to harems. There are other equally vile things that happen, but suffice to say that the wicked cretins in charge have violated God’s work in the most depraved manner.
The story has a faith thread, a romance thread and a sci-fi thread all braided together to give us a frightening yet hope filled story.
If you enjoy novel rich with detail both in character and plot, Outriders is the perfect choice for you. I think those who enjoy sci-fi and fantasy will be especially delighted with this book.
