ONCE BURNED by Jackie Griffey

Once Burned is the story of insurance claims adjuster, Chris Lovell. She is a hard worker with her head firmly on her shoulders until the day she makes eye contact with a gorgeous man in the store. She gawks at him until she comes to herself and escapes in total embarrassment. The problem is that she can’t seem to forget about him, and keeps seeing him at a distance. Then she goes to a tire store with a fire claim. And there he is, the mystery man, Richard Duffle, AKA Duff. br>
Duff has been interested in Chris since the day he caught her staring at him in the store. He did everything he could to find her, and spotted her several times, but never managed to catch her. Finally, she showed up at his store, representing his insurance company. Duff jumps at the chance to pursue a relationship with this intriguing woman.

But something occurs to shake Chris’ faith in Duff. She’s been burned in relationships before, and believing Duff has been deceptive is more than she can take. She takes an out of town assignment and leaves without telling Duff. Duff’s reaction can make the difference between saving and destroying their relationship.

Jackie Griffey’s writing is uneven and at times repetitious. Her plot is good and the suspenseful sections kept me on the edge of my seat. I learned about how claims adjusters work from this novel. But I never felt like I got a good sense of who Chris was. Duff seemed more realistic to me. My overall reaction was that this was a decent book, though not spectacular.
