Mystery

MY VERY OWN MURDER by Josephine Carr

Anne Johnson is almost fifty. She’s also divorced and her two children are off leading their own lives. Thanks to an inheritance from her grandmother and her divorce settlement she is comfortably well off. She has no idea what to do with herself because she was a stay at home mom. Then one day she hears a voice in her head warning her there will be a murder in her building in thirty days, and to stop it from happening. Since she’s never heard voices before, she doubts that she’s gone crazy.

She talks to the building’s cleaning lady, Mary and together they decide Anne should throw a party for the building tenants to find out who is going to commit murder. In the meantime, Anne pursues a gorgeous younger Russian neighbor. He’s high on her list of suspects, but he’s so sexy she can’t resist.

As Anne and Mary continue to investigate, they learn more things and become frightened. The party becomes a family affair for both Mary and Anne. The revelation of who is going to be murdered and why is well written and both amusing and suspenseful.

I enjoyed this mystery; the heroine was strong, self-aware, and willing to take chances without being stupid about it. Mary was a wonderful character, and someone I’d like to meet. The unlikely friendship between a rich white woman, and the African American cleaning woman in her building was described without being cloying or stereotypical.

Josephine Carr is an excellent writer and I will definitely look for her other books.
