Time Travel - Romance

A LOVE OUT OF TIME by Rick Adkins

Present time and the year 1896

If you had a chance to go back in time to help out and old friend, would you do it?

Matt Collins was given a tube from a construction site. He tried every possible way to open it, but couldn’t. The only thing he had to go on was part of a name TSP, what was it? He did research on the company, nothing was coming up, he was stumped, he was just about to give up, when he meets up with and old professor of his, H. Parkwood. Parkwood taught Physics at Matt’s college. The professor tells Matt the tube is from his son, Ben, from the year 1896.

Matt is in disbelief. He does not believe you can travel from one time period to the next, it just can’t happen. The professor explains to Matt how it is possible to travel back and forth in time. The professor also tells Matt they haven’t heard from Ben in a few weeks and they are worried something happened to him. The professor asks Matt if he could go back in time and help locate Ben, there isn’t anyone else the professor can send. Matt at first does not want to, but the more the professor tells him, the more Matt starts thinking maybe it is possible for time travel. The only thing Matt can’t do is change any events which happened in 1896, if he does, he might change his future, he would not be born. Matt reads every newspaper in the archives he can get his hands on for the year 1896 for Philadelphia. He also has to dress the way men did back then, he can’t afford to stick out. He has one goal to find and bring back Ben, before time runs out for both of them. br>
Amanda Caruthers was working in the Assessors office in 1896. Matt had to take care of some deed work, he was pretending to be a relative of Ben. He meets Amanda there, he realizes she must be the Amanda he read about dying in a horrible fire in 1896, but the newspaper did not have the date on it. Matt is attracted to Amanda. Amanda had been hurt terribly by a man in the past, she is somewhat standoffish with Matt, she does not want to get hurt again. There is something about Matt though which has her intrigued, she just can’t figure out what it is.

Matt and Amanda do spend time with each other, when Matt is not out looking for Ben. Matt realizes Amanda is the woman of his dreams, but he is not of her time. Can he prevent Amanda from dying in the fire without changing his future? Will Matt find Ben in time? Or will he be forever living in 1896? Will Amanda find out he is from the future? Will she believe him or will she think he is just like the man who hurt her?

I normally don’t read time travel books, but there was something about this book which kept me hooked.  I think it was the fact the character choose to go back in time. Matt was a great character, he had to walk a fine line, not only in two different centuries, but also in truth and deceit, he did a great job in both with out giving away the truth. Amanda was a sensible character, she liked being with Matt, but also at the same time, she felt there was something about him, she just could not figure out what that something was. You will not be disappointed in this book. There is time travel, romance, mystery, and intrigue.
