What would happen if everything technological, EVERYTHING, went dead? That is the premise for this story Last Light. No cars. No computers. No phones. Hospital equipment? Out. Shopping? Nope. Television, video games, internet? Nope, no, and no. Everything that doesn’t pump blood through veins to give life is dead.
Last Light tells the tale of the Branning Family as they struggle through this tragedy. Mr. Branning speculates it is an EMP that caused the black out, but he’s not sure. One struggles with her own agenda. She is bound and determined to start her new job, her new life, not regarding at all the danger, peril, and sorrow her journey might make. The mother is heart broken and a little ticked off that her family has been hiding behaviors and breaking house rules right under her. In the midst of the dilemma, each family member exposes his or her true nature by their actions or inactivity. It’s not real pretty. And, while no on really understands what has happened, a lot of speculation is made: could be terrorists, could be an EMP, aliens, anything really. But, what is the real story and pretty scary is what is discovered about family members and ourselves – when the lights truly go out.
I enjoyed Last Light, the unique plot and well developed characters kept me truly turning pages until the end. Suspense and mystery intrigued me and kept me wanting more. I was, however, disappointed with the ending, but I realize it also serves as a launching pad for book two. So, while I am a bit bummed about the ending, I really look forward to number two in the Restoration series.
