Dreaming in Technicolor is a chick lit novel that takes place in California and England.
Phoebe Grant is a heroine most readers can sympathize with. She has trouble with her finances, her spiritual life, and her boyfriend is commitment shy.
Alex comes from old money. His family owns the newspaper where Phoebe works. After Alex goes back to England because his father has a heart attack, Phoebe and her friend Mary Jo take advantage of an airfare special and visit England.
When Phoebe’s best friend Lindsey becomes engaged, it changes their relationship. Phoebe isn’t ready for the way her relationships with Lindsey and Alex change because of changed circumstances. Her relationship with Mary Jo deepens as they travel together.
I liked the character development in this book. Phoebe has a little problem with her weight as well as her spiritual life and love life. The way she matures is a delight to watch. And her take on Merry Old England gives the reader color, flavor, and a desire to see these sights, too. I did think the last chapter had one scene that was too abrupt, but if the author is setting up a third book in the series, it works.
I highly recommend this book to readers who love chick lit. The heroine seems more balanced than many of the chick lit heroines I’ve read, and the characters are more three-dimensional, even when they are quirky.
