THE SCENT OF LILACS by Ann H. Gabhart

David Brooke is the acting minister at Mt. Pleasant Church.  He is hoping they vote to have him as the interim pastor.  He doesn’t think he will stand a chance of becoming the regular minister because of what happened seven years ago.  He is now raising his one daughter, Jocie, by himself, since his wife didn't want to be a minister's wife any longer.

David has a full plate.  His daughter Jocie and his Aunt Love get along like oil and water.  He also runs the local newspaper.  His elder daughter, Tabitha shows up one night with bags in tow.  He knows there is a reason she came back, but for the life of him, he can’t figure out what it is.  There is also Leigh, a woman David is attracted to, he feels that maybe she is a bit too young for him, and would the church vote him in if he was involved with her?

Jocie Brooke is a charmer.  But she is also a handful for her Dad.  She just can’t understand why her Aunt Love is always quoting bible verses to her about everything.  Jocie is also wondering why her sister came back home and not their mother.  She is trying real hard to be a good girl.  She has to, she is a preacher’s kid!  She would really like to see her father and Leigh as a couple.  So she starts her “I want a step-mother” prayer.  She figured since she had an “I want a dog” prayer and she found a dog, that it would come true.

This was a wonderful book.  Jocie was a great character to read about.  She tried so hard to be good and not get in trouble.  Her heart was in the right place, but her mouth kept getting in the way.  Her Dad, David was also a great character.  He knew that the whole town knew what his ex-wife was like.  But he didn’t let that get in the way of his sermons.   The minor character, Aunt Love was a special treat, she was always quoting bible verses to Jocie, and she was like the glue that kept everyone together.

One word of warning:  There is mention of infidelity in this book.  But it was handled with style and grace by Ann Gabhart.
