Fertile, Missouri 1934 -
The
people of Fertile and down by the river are just trying to survive the
depression. Doc has hired a new nurse,
April Asbury to help him in his clinic.
There are town secrets which will change everyone’s
life. Doc also has a secret from the town,
and once
it is known, he could loose everything.
April
Asbury is excited about been in this quaint town. Not
even all the rain Fertile is getting can
bring her down. She meets Joe Jones. He
is part of the beloved Jones clan. He is
a charmer, April does not want to get friendly with him, she has a
feeling he
has left broken hearts all over town.
April’s strength is tested not only by Joe, but also
by all the ugly
gossip that is circling the town about her and Doc.
Joe Jones
is attracted to April the second he lays eyes on her, but she keeps him
at arms
length. He is over the top in love with her, he can’t get her out of
his dreams
or thoughts. When she tells him she does
not want to be just another conquest of his, he is beside himself. One way or another he will win April’s heart.
Doc hasn’t
told anyone, including April of his plans.
He is love with a woman, not just any woman, but one
the town people
would tar and feather if they found out about her.
He knows the only way they can be together in
public is to leave Fertile. When the
river starts rising near where Doc’s true love is, he takes a chance
and brings
her to his house. Doc has his hands full
with the flood, people coming to the clinic for various ailments and
keeping
Caroline out of sight and safe.
When
circumstances keep throwing April and Joe together, they learn to trust
each
other and April learns not to believe everything she hears. Joe learns April is not like the other women
he has dated. She is special.
He is in awe of her when they are all tested
to the max when the river rises. Joe and
Doc along with April work together to make sure nobody is hurt during
the
flood.
I could not
put this book down! There was suspense,
romance, mystery. It had all the elements
of a first class book. I really liked
April’s character, she kept to her values, she kept true to herself. She did not panic when in a tense
situation. I also adored Joe’s
character. He didn’t give up on April,
he had strong ties to his family, he also was a great friend to Doc.
If you want
to get the Jones family, they are in A Place Called Rainwater, High
on a
Hill, and The Edge of Town. You cannot
go wrong reading a book by Dorothy Garlock, regardless if it is a
historical or
a contemporary novel.
