Jake Patterson knows no other life than that of a slave. His father was a conscientious man, and tried to teach Jake to obey the white man, but Jake began to hate his father when his father was sold to another plantation, believing his father abandoned him. Now a white man has killed his mother and Jake fears what will happen to him if someone learns the truth. Since Jake’s mother made him promise to find his father, Jake runs away from the plantation he’s serving on.
Life on the run isn’t so easy. The War Between the States is beginning to break out and Jake doesn’t get very far before he’s discovered by Rebel troops. Will he even make it to Carolina and hope to find his father somewhere there? Or will he die before he gets to his destination?
One thing I disliked about the story is that A PERILOUS PROPOSAL seems to start near the end of the book and then the story is told in back story until it catches up to itself and goes forward. It made it rather difficult at times to keep track of the time frame and setting.
A PERILOUS PROPOSAL is written in omniscient point of view, and no one is
exempt, not even the dogs or the chickens. Nevertheless, in spite of the
sometimes jarring point of view jumps, A PERILOUS PROPOSAL is well
written and holds the readers interest to the end.
