Kasey
Crandall couldn’t have been happier with her life. She’s married to a
wealthy
and kind man, pregnant and she should be at the highest point in her
life. But
unluckily she is not…
After
the birth of her daughter, Kasey’s husband Graham doesn’t seem all that
excited
to be a father and ignores her fears that there is something wrong with
their
daughter. But Kasey is determined to find out what is wrong with her
child, and
ultimately her marriage since they can’t stand united for their child.
Kasey
meets Josh McGraw at the hospital, a man who is unlike any other she’s
ever
known. He is a recovering alcoholic and the two become fast friends
which she
finds exactly what she needs. But is Josh someone that she should be
leaning
on? Kasey questions everything she’s known, felt and held close to her
heart
over the years. She will fight for her child, but is her marriage worth
fighting for? Kasey discovers a lot about herself, the true power of
love and
tries to find her own luck in the chaos that her once quiet and perfect
life
has become…
To
say Jennifer Greene has been one of my favourite authors in the last
couple
years is an understatement. I have enjoyed her stories many times over.
Lucky for me however fell under
the radar, wasn’t up to par to the standard of the writing I have
enjoyed from
this author time and again. While I felt
for Kasey with her daughter, the fear that something wasn't right and
the
helplessness she felt when there was nowhere else to go, unfortunately
my
kindness toward Kasey ended there.
Kasey’s
relationship with Josh would have been more realistic, more accepting,
had
Kasey and Graham been divorced or separated, but not while they were
still
married and just had a child together. I found this left me greatly
detached
from the story. Had this aspect of the story not been present, I would
have
enjoyed the story much, much more. Yes,
I disliked Graham greatly, however it
doesn't
mean that Kasey could have a relationship with another man, and enjoy it so much just because of that.
To
say I am disappointed is a given, but as a fan of Ms. Greene’s I have
faith in
her writing and hope her next book wins me over. Sometimes one miss doesn’t take away from
all the
hits.
