BEYOND ILLUSION by Sherri L. King

Ellie, a reporter for a review magazine, is overworked, but the sometimes the job almost seems worth it. When her boss comes in and tells her she’s got a new assignment, she’s surprised to find out it’s to do a review of a magician. After all, she doesn’t believe in magic, which is exactly why her editor decides to pick her. She goes to the show expecting to be under whelmed and disappointed. To her dismay, she not only likes the show, but ends up sleeping with the star.

Vincent sees Ellie in the audience and is captivated by her instantly. She gives off a glow in her aura that no one else has for him, and he knows that she’s a lot more like him that she thinks. He knows that she’s the one for him, but he’s got a secret to tell Ellie, and he’s not sure how she will take it. Some of his tricks are a lot more than they seem.

Ellie’s got a lot of skepticism about magic, and has a difficult time believing that someone as sexy and compelling as Vincent could want her above all others. She’s convinced he will tire of her, because he has so much more to choose from than plain old her. When out of the blue her life is threatened, she finds out just how much he cares.

I liked Ellie and her personality; she was a strong person who was able to stand on her own two feet. She was determined to not end up with Vincent, positive that he would just break her heart. Vincent was a great guy who is strong and sexy, and does not take no for an answer. The sex in the book was hot and steamy, guaranteed to leave you needing a fan. While the sex was hot, I didn’t think that the characters had a lot of chemistry together. Ellie, while strong in other aspects, was too insecure in herself to believe that Vincent could love her and it was a little hard to swallow that she suddenly believed that she was good enough. Vincent seemed more like a guy with a new toy than a man madly in love, at least to me. I would have loved to have known more about the secret society that Vincent belonged too, as well as a little more background on him. I think it would have made him feel more real to me. I really enjoyed reading the book though, the magic and the characters where great. I would definitely love to see what Sherri L. King comes up with next, and look forward to her next great story.
