SAVANNAH COMES UNDONE by Denise Hildreth

Savannah Phillips’ world turned topsy-turvy when she discovers her mother in chains. Mrs. Victoria Phillips, the former Miss Georgia United States of America, has wrapped herself around a large stone monument bearing the Ten Commandments. The judiciary has threatened to have it removed, and Mrs. Phillips protests. Savannah’s embarrassment over her mother’s antics leads her on a journey to self-discovery.

Savannah from Savannah, Georgia, is a newspaperwoman. Well, she writes a column, but sees herself becoming a journalist. Her ego gets a punch when the major television reporters flock to the courthouse square to ogle her mother. She has to write about the event. What can she say that won’t flabbergast the community? Her pride is at stake.

Cute Joshua, her coworker, doesn’t make life easier with his flirting. But she’s still set on winning back her high school sweetheart. How will her life get on track with her mother gone? Who will cook dinner?

A floral clad stranger appears in Savannah’s life and drops hints of wisdom as she snatches bits of food from Savannah’s dinner. Chance encounters allow the woman to drive home points which the self-centered heroine needs to learn. Savannah’s father punctuates those points with his opinions. As the days pass, Savannah takes a new look at her mother and evaluates her stand. A visit from President Bush only highlights the events.

Dripping with drama, Savannah is the spoiled Southern belle who comes to terms with real life. Her proper up-bringing fashioned her, and it’s now time to discover who she really is.

Denise Hildreth’s book is filled with Southern charm and wit. Savannah’s prom queen behavior made this reader long to put her in a “time out” corner, yet grin as the girl matures.
