At a young age, Colin Wyndham, the bastard son of the Earl of Montcleve, is accused of murdering his father. He escapes capture, but remains on the run from his vengeful brother for close to ten years. Until he and his band of pirates are captured and await execution on Barbados.
Katherine Abbot moves to Barbados after the death of her husband. Her brother is the Commodore of the English troops there. One day, when she stands with her brother at a troop inspection, she’s alarmed at the cruelty she sees a soldier dole out to a group of prisoners in chains. She rushes to their aid, not knowing that her rash decision will change the rest of her life.
Colin takes advantage of Kate’s rescue and kidnaps her as collateral that he will escape alive. Pirates, high sea chase, and justice all culminate in a bond between Colin and Kate formed from love, trust, and adventure.
BLACKBIRD is a delightful short story with a fiery heroine and tenacious hero. Kate and Colin’s love/hate relationship is engaging and steamy at the same time. Kudos to Grace Draven for creating a superb pirate story, filled with adventure and passion. Aarrrgh.
