Angelina is a typical college freshmen, full class load and lots of friends. Her dreams are far from typical, however. She dreams nightly of sensual touches, unknown lovers, and passion. Her dreams have begun to consume her. All she wants to do is dream, to live in her erotic nights. Since her eighteenth birthday, her night dreams have turned into day dreams or more like tangible thoughts. Every man around her is drawn to her and she can feel each look like a lover’s caress.
Jim and Angelina have been best friends for years. He’s held his secret love for her in check because she never saw him as more than a friend. He’s willing to bide his time until Angelina is ready to move their friendship to the next level. That is until Angel comes along. He knows her only as a picture in a newspaper, but thoughts and desires for her begin to consume him.
Angelina can’t function with out her dreams, and she’s having blackouts as well. Jim is consumed with a woman only available to him in a newspaper. Their friendship begins to disintegrate even though they both know they can only find sanity with each other. But will they find each other again before they lose themselves?
I’m not sure if the J. Gelis Band had this level of sensuality in mind when they wrote this song, but Pearl Jones has taken a hot hit from the 80’s and turned it into the perfect “Behind the Song” story. Ms. Jones writes with great detail and visualization. Each dream that Angelina has is poetic and erotic in its own way. The young angst felt by Jim for Angelina brings back youthful memories of first loves while refreshing at the same time. I, for one, tend to just listen to the melody of a song, but ANGEL IS A CENTERFOLD makes me wonder just what lies behind the lyrics of today’s popular songs. I bet Pearl Jones knows…
