Anna Rose Brooks, a commoner in the English community of St. Giles, has fashioned new sails to enter a naval competition. Winning is her ticket out of the slums. She wasn’t prepared to meet Rein Montgomery and have her life turned upside down.
Duke Rein Montgomery is issued the ultimate challenge by his late uncle’s will. He must survive in the commoner’s world for one month. Not about to be defeated, Rein sets out to prove his mettle. A whack on the head brings him into Anna’s life, and he loses his heart. Montgomery has always been a ladies’ man, but this woman captures him. Anna’s senile grandfather chaperones the two as their attraction continues to flourish.
After a time, Rein woos and beds Anna. She is miserable over the scandal. She knows Rein doesn’t come from her world. Rein must decide. Their lives are too different, but he can’t leave her behind. What will he do?
The class difference is precisely established in this historical novel set in 1819, and presents a conflict to the well defined characters portrayed. Pamela Britton has written a good story about prejudice and poverty mixed with truth. A touch of sensuality runs through a scene or two, but the message is clear. Love can overcome obstacles.
