LOVERS AND LIARS by Joesphine Cox

Emily Ramsden has so much to love for, that bright sunny day. As she ran toward the special place she was to meet John Hanley would be. She loved John and together they had planned for the day when they would wed.

Before he got to her, Emily's uncle had made it clear that John was never to see Emily again. It would be better if he left town completely or Emily would face repercussions if he tried to contact her. It was a bitter sweet meeting when John did reach Emily. He told her that he was leaving in order to get enough money and would be back to wed her one day. Emily didn't understand but she promised to wait for John and that she would marry him when he returned.

Heartbroken Emily faces a sad world without John, only made even worse was the fact that as she was alone in the barn her uncle attacks and rapes her. Ashamed to tell her mother of what happened and after nine months she gives birth to Cathleen. Everyone assumes it's John's child and Emily never states Cathleen is or not for fear of what her uncle would do to her and the family. Clem is a brutal man who is not above doing anything to get his own way. His sister, Emily's mother lives in fear of him. Her fear is from the time when she was just a young girl when he brutally rapped her and threatened her as he did Emily, though Aggie couldn't prove it was the same case she still had her suspicion.

Two years past and though John had still remembered his promise to Emily, she now had Cathleen to think of. John returned home to find that Emily had a child and was told that she had married Danny Williams. It was now the broken hearted John leaves, his world shattered thinking Emily had not waited.

Do John and Emily really find each other and bring back the love they had that bright sunny day? Does Emily ever tell who the real father of Cathleen is? What of Uncle Clem, is he ever made to answer to for his deeds?

An excellent story that will keep you pressed to the pages as we follow Emily's life and find her true happiness. Emily is an extremely string young woman who faces the loss of her love, the shame of being raped and having a child that is her uncle's and yet she still keeps going. I was happy when I got to the end of the story to see that she does get happiness at last.
