Chloe Kimball of Ivy Manor has spent her life with unhappy parents. Her politician father makes use of Chloe’s beauty parading her before his constituents, even convincing her to give a speech. It’s during this first speech she spots a newcomer, tall dark and handsome. Her heart leaps into her throat, and she’s captivated.
Theran Black meets Chloe on a dare but soon falls under her spell. He’s not of her class, but decides before he heads to World War I, he’d marry Chloe. In a daring elopement, the couple flees to New York and spends a wonderful weekend together. Theran ships out leaving Chloe behind. Her life long friends are there to comfort her.
Now the young, privileged lady must find her way on her own. With a stroke of luck, she is hired as a model and a career is begun. Her parents are enraged. No woman of her station works at the turn of the century. Circumstances cause Chloe to return to Ivy Manor where her father uses her for his gain once again. How will she stand up to her family and be the woman God intended her to become?
Lyn Cote’s story of a naïve girl becoming a woman in fast-paced society is riveting. The historical backdrop of war and the Depression give plenty of room for drama. This reader found the book an excellent read.
