TRUTH OR BARE by Sally Apple

Melvin Spear didn’t think his life could get any worse. His mother had recently passed away from a long illness, he had no other family, and he’d lost his job. Worse became a reality when he caught his girlfriend having a Halloween ménage á trois. Life starts looking up when he finds an address of a relative he didn’t realize he had.

Dr. Laura Spear, resident physician for Willamette University, is vying for grant money from the University for her research titled, Olympic Project. Her theory is that sexual activity will not inhibit the athlete, as was the popular belief. When she receives a call from her long lost adopted sister’s son, she’s sad that her sister is gone, but elated that her nephew is found and coming to visit.

Their first meeting ends up being more of a patient/doctor situation when Melvin arrives extremely sick and dehydrated. Melvin is surprised to learn that his “aunt” is not blood related and not much older than him. She’s sexy, as well, and Melvin’s determined to seduce her. Laura strives to keep their relationship purely platonic, but Melvin stirs up feelings in her she thought were long dead. Will Laura get the grant she’s been working toward? Will Laura and Melvin be able to work through the stigmata of the older woman, younger man taboo?

Even though the age difference between Laura and Melvin is a factor of the story, the focus is more about Laura opening up to her own sexuality and accepting love in any form. I would have liked to see a little more life focus from Melvin, but his determination to honor his love for Laura won me over. With tact and heated style, Sally Apple has written an entertaining love story that supersedes society’s views on relationships. Pick up a copy today, I bare … er … dare you.
