Holly is a dedicated,
brilliant genetic scientist that is getting frustrated
by the new government laws regarding her research.
She can cure cancer and other diseases in lab
animals with her genetic research, but due to some experiments gone bad
she is
not allowed to try her cures on humans. The government knows that she
is
talented, and wants her to work on their super soldier project in
return for
letting her continue her other research.
She’s refused repeatedly because she doesn’t want to
create weapons, but
they are getting more and more demanding.
Devoted to her work, she has decided that she just
isn’t cut out for a
deep relationship. Then she runs into
Mason, and her whole outlook on life changes.
Mason has been sent on a
dangerous assignment to acquire a famous
genetic scientist. When he runs into
Holly, he gets an unexpected surprise.
He finds himself wildly attracted to her in ways
that he has never been
with any other woman. He’s an enhanced
soldier which means that he has abilities that normal people don’t. He
had
thought that he would never be able to have a normal family life, so
the last
thing he wants to do is get involved with someone because of the
uncertainty in
his life. He’s finding himself unable to control his attraction to
Holly
because his very nature is driving him to her.
Somehow, Holly is his destined mate.
Both characters came
alive for me, and I really wanted them to succeed
in a relationship. Holly was a great
character;
she went after what she wanted regardless of what the cost. She falls for Mason in a big way, and it was
great to see that it was unconditional love.
It seemed to me that she didn’t have to think about
his differences and
come to terms with them; they were just a part of him.
Mason was a tormented man who thought no one
would want the monster he thought himself to be. When they finally come
together, the sparks fly and there is a lot of passion and urgency to
their
lovemaking. It’s not a hard-core erotica;
there are some very hot and passionate love scenes but they are not the
only
thing the book is about. I thought it
was a wonderful story that had a lot of different things going on to
keep you
glued to the story. I would highly
recommend this first installment of the series, and I am eagerly
looking
forward to the next one in the Underground Guardian series.
