Luke Boudreau, an Army Ranger returning home, stops in Grover, Mississippi, to make a condolence call. One of his men, Calvin Abbott, was killed during a rescue mission, and Luke visits Calvin's mother to offer his sympathy. He is shocked to discover that Calvin was married. He'd never mentioned a wife, and certainly hadn't acted like a married man. Calvin's widow, Analise, was unhappy in her marriage, but is content and secure with her new family.
Luke had planned to return home to Indiana, but he stays to assist the family. Cole, Olivia's son by a second marriage, is acting out his grief over his brother's death by drinking, sneaking out, and letting his grades slip. And Magnolia Mile, the family nursery business, is short-handed, with an important project nearing deadline. So Luke remains to help however he can. He is drawn to Analise, and the feeling is mutual. But both are held back by feelings of guilt--Luke blames himself for Calvin's death and Analise had once wished him dead.
Analise's mother-in-law, Olivia, is a fascinating character. Twice widowed, she's had her share of sorrow, but still has a zest for life, and a gentle and caring spirit. She also has a secret that will change all their lives--and will teach them about love, sacrifice, and courage.
This novel is exceptionally well written, with characters that come to life on the page with depth and individuality. Crandall has expertly woven the theme of second chances and new beginnings throughout in an inspiring way. I recommend this book highly and look forward to reading more of Susan Crandall's novels.
