DERIK'S BANE by MaryJanice Davidson

When he unexpectedly turns Alpha, werewolf Derik Gardner knows he has to leave the pack as staying meant either getting killed by or killing the current alpha who's also his best friend. When a psychic pack mate proclaims the end of world near unless someone does 'something about' the reincarnation of Morgan Le Fay, the feared sorceress from the King Arthur legends, Derik volunteers for the mission. He heads to southern California and is instantly smitten by the reincarnation who's the beautiful, innocent and ditzy Dr. Sara Gunn who has no clue why people are suddenly out to kill her.

Whether due to Sara's everlasting uncanny luck or his own half-hearted attempts, Derik is unable to kill Sara. With lust on his brain, he strikes a bargain with her to take her on a cross-country journey to Salem to uncover the truth. While his raging metabolism is a pain, Sara can't help but be affected by Derik's impressive and non-stop libido. On a journey of distances and discovery these two disparate souls find something in common - love. However there's just that pesky little 'end of the world' problem and on it depends the fate of the world as well as their own personal destinies.

To use a gambling analogy, reading a book by MaryJanice Davidson is like playing with loaded dice - the odds are always in favor of the reader and there's very little chance of coming away feeling cheated when the last page is turned. This latest zany story by Davidson has two central characters - Sara, a powerful reincarnated witch who can't be killed and Derik, a werewolf with superhuman abilities who cannot die and together they're on a mission to prevent the end of the world. Such a promising premise not only ensures there's comedy and witty banter galore but also provides romance and passion enough to make the very pages sizzle. Surprises, both hilariously funny and deadly serious, add to the general mayhem. All in all, to say author MaryJanice Davidson's tales are unpredictable is to understate the case, but one thing's for sure - like Derik's libido, they never fail to impress. The only complaint this reviewer had was that the engaging story ends all too quickly.
