Danny
Porter is having a very bad day when this book starts. She’s been
accused of
and framed for stealing and fired from her job. On the drive home, she
can’t
hold back the tears any longer and pulls her car over for a good cry.
That’s
when her humiliation becomes complete. Trying to fall apart quietly and
minding
her own business, she is interrupted by the best-looking man she’s ever
seen.
Unfortunately, the man turns out to be a local law enforcement officer
– worse
than that, he’s her old high school crush.
Officer
Michael McAllister is surprised when a routine traffic stop turns into
an
abbreviated high school reunion. He’d had the hots for her since the
first time
he’d seen her and the years hadn’t cooled his ardor one bit. It doesn’t
help
matters when he finds her embroiled in some kind of espionage. Since
high
school, he’s had problems with trust and being an officer of the law
has only
reinforced that. He knows he’s in love with her but will he ever be
able to
trust her?
Readers
will laugh at some of Ms. Barrett’s quips and observations as she moves
her
characters down the rocky road of love and distrust. Danny is feisty
and fun
and easy to identify with. Poor Michael spends equal time confused and
attracted by her. Often he’s left doing the best he can to keep up.
Thankfully,
Ms. Barrett provided him with a fuzzy sidekick for help – a chocolate Labrador dog called Bacon.
There’s
plenty of mystery and intrigue in this book, and to go along with the
love and
humor, it was very engaging.
However,
I found from time to time, that the scene/point of view switches were
too
abrupt. Also there were a few editing
problems, which mixed
with the difficulties with the switches, made for a somewhat difficult
read at
times. Overall, the enjoyment of the characters made this a good tale.
