DREAMING OF AMERIKA is the true story of Gabe Kubichek, a man who hated the communist system and desperately yearned for freedom his entire life. As a young boy, Gabe learned about America from his older brothers and dreamed of someday living there, escaping the communist rule.
Gabe grew up during the depression, World War II and the Russian and German occupation of his native Hungary. He takes part in a failed Revolution, and then attempts to flee to the West and freedom. Will Gabe achieve his dreams or die trying?
DREAMING OF AMERIKA is an autobiography, written by a man, who, as a boy, flirted with danger. I would have been petrified if my young son played with the dangerous toys that Gabe filled his days with. I think in parts of the book, there is too much information, I can’t imagine Gabe’s own family wanting to know some of the stuff shared in the book, but all in all, the story is written like Gabe is sitting right beside you, telling you the story in person.
Whether the book is worth the rather steep price, I can’t say. Most of the things in the story one can learn from studying history books about Russia and Hungary, so the things Gabe
experienced came as no surprise. If one would like a first hand account of what happened during those horrible days, then they might be interested in DREAMING OF AMERIKA. There is some graphic sexual information included and some foul language, which may upset some readers.
