Queen of Dragons is one out of six individually published short stories that originally appeared in the anthology Phantasmagoria. These stories were the most talked about from the anthology. Each one has a twist on familiar situations.
War is tough, but the War Duke is tougher and he is confident he will win against his enemy despite the rumours of a sorceress named Wyvrn working for the other side. When he is captured, the War Duke discovers the rumours are true and he is to be given to the Wyvrn for her own use. Has he met his match?
This was an interesting, although somewhat violent, story. Hawke does a good job of creating a new fantasy world in a short amount of time. The use of magic in the story was interesting to see as well. Hawke also uses vivid imagery and the colour red is used throughout the story. This serves to effectively reinforce the theme of blood and ties in well with the Wyvrn’s magic. Many of the descriptions in the story make you think you can almost smell the scent of blood. I would recommend this story to others, but only if you don’t mind reading something with violence in it.
WARNING: Contains violence and images of blood.
