When actress Cherylyn Dwyer is murdered, her six year old co-star, Kassidy Scanlin, is a potential witness. Although Kassidy didn’t see the murderer, the murderer thinks she did and wants to make sure Kassidy doesn’t tell anyone. Maureen Beckett, Kassidy’s mother, is not happy when devilishly sexy Homicide Detective Jace Brooks tells her that Kassidy will need 24-hour protection until the murderer is apprehended. Maureen is a free spirit and doesn’t want to be contained, but she will protect her daughter at all costs and there’s something about Jace that has her blood pumping.
Jace Brooks is hard-hitting, serious homicide detective, but Maureen Beckett makes him crazy in more ways than one. On his first security watch, one thing leads to another and he has a few rolls between the sheets with Maureen. Racked with guilt, Jace swears it won’t happen again. He’s got to stay focused and sleeping with the mother of a witness could cost him the witness and his job. Nevertheless, he thinks Maureen may be worth the risk. How can he keep Kassidy safe when he can’t keep his hands and mind off her mother?
OUR LOVE OF LIFE is one of those books that I felt provided a little too much sexual detail. I found some parts distasteful and I could have done with out all the “bloody” detail. I’m not at all opposed to graphic sex in a story, but this one was too extreme even for me. The story itself was actually a good one and if I could have skipped over the parts too distasteful for me, especially the tampon/shower part, I would have really enjoyed the book as a whole. I know the author was trying to show an intense close connection between the couple, but some things are just too personal to put on paper. I know I wouldn’t recommend this book to my friends and it’s not a book that I would consider reading again, even though the story line and the characters were appealing. I’m sure there is an audience for this type book out there somewhere, but for the reasons mentioned, this reader isn’t in that audience.
