FORSAKEN by Jane Toombs

Charis was once a figment of a man’s imagination, but in the Temple of Time, imaginations have a way of becoming reality. With the breath of the magic ahvar, Blanca, Charis became a real woman, yet just because physically she looked like a woman, didn’t mean she knew how to be one. Blanca enlisted an older woman, Hulda to assist in Charis’ schooling, but Hulda could only teach Charis so much. Until one day, a strange man came to Hulda and Charis’ home.

Prince Xenon is the bastard son of King Jerbom of Mizpa. Prince or not, now that his father is dead, Xenon’s brother wants him dead too. His older brother Randon is next in line to be king, but Jerbom gave Xenon the True King’s Ring, so the only way Randon can be the true king is with the ring. The only safe place for Xenon to flee too is the Temple of Time, but will he ever leave once he’s there?

Randon’s pursuit of Xenon continues into the Temple of Time. Xenon must find away out through a gate to another world, but according to Charis, her destiny lies with him and he will do anything to keep her from danger. Their journey to the gate is fraught with peril, poisonous croma worms, dangerous ferals, and the constant pursuit from Randon’s goons, but the more danger Xenon and Charis run into, Xenon’s desire to keep Charis at a distance for her safety is less and less as his love grows. Will they make it to the gate together and in time?

FORSAKEN is the second book in Jane Toombs TEMPLE OF TIME series, but is written so that the book stands on its own merit. I’ve read the first book in the series, Forbidden and think it is the better of the two. The chemistry between Charis and Xenon is basically written only. I didn’t get any feeling that these two were meant to be together. The story tells of great adventure and peril but the tone was mechanical, taking away the feeling of anticipation of what will happen next on Charis and Xenon’s adventure. If you’re a fan of the previous TEMPLE OF TIME book, FORSAKEN will give you a good fix of the wonders that occur in the TEMPLE, but you might not leave redeemed.
