CRYSTAL LIES by Melody Carlson

Glennis Harmon lives the perfect life that most people envy. The wife of a prominent city attorney and the mother of two nearly adult children, Glennis is content in her world. But when her nineteen-year-old son Jacob is drawn into substance abuse, Glennis’ perfect world shatters.

As Glennis struggles to understand the response of her family and tries to encourage Jacob to give up Meth, she is horrified to discover that her husband of twenty-five years seems more concerned with protecting his image than with finding help for their son. Glennis alone seems determined to save Jacob. When her husband and their daughter accuse her of being an enabler to Jacob’s problem instead of helping to find a solution, the relationships with her daughter and husband become strained. And when Glennis discovers a revelation about her husband, it will push her to the brink.

CRYSTAL LIES is a compelling story about a difficult subject matter. Written in first person, the reader instantly becomes immersed in Glennis’ world—feeling the pain and confusion and the heartache along with her. I hoped that Jacob would come to want to be free from his addictions but feared he wouldn’t. The characters became real enough I almost wanted to pray for them.

I couldn’t put CRYSTAL LIES down. I had to keep reading to discover what would happen next. There were some decisions made that I was disappointed with, and I would have liked to have seen some sense of closure in other areas, but all in all, CRYSTAL LIES is a satisfying read. Discussion questions are included at the back of the book, making this perfect for a discussion group.
