Brilliant surgeon Samuel Truelove has the perfect life. Until the day he botches an operation, leaving the patient virtually lifeless, and also loses his beautiful young daughter. His wife is not able or willing to forgive him. She believes his choices contributed if not caused their daughters death. She packs up and moves far away.
Sam becomes an introvert and joins a small medical clinic. He no longer feels the joy and thrill of healing, but still his hands and instinct are near perfect and while he once thought it all God given, he gives little credence to that now.
God uses a senior citizen named Ginny to play the role of nudging Samuel back to God. Ginny’s group of friends, The Birthday Club, meets at the same restaurant for the June Birthday celebration. Ginny has been intrigued by the actions of the man at the restaurants corner table for the past five years. He always shows up, expectantly watches patrons arrive, and finally discouraged, he leaves. Ginny’s always hoping the one he watches for will show up. This year Ginny knows she must follow the Lord’s promptings and talk to the stranger. When she does, it’s as if the man sees all of his options clearly. But, will he act on those options?
What God can do through willing people is amazing. He is powerful, loving, and cares about each one of us. But, just as we don’t always follow what we know He wants, the characters in this book, Annie and Samuel must not learn the truth, but follow His lead. Is it too late? Has too much time passed? What will happen if both put aside their selfish coveted hurts and simply embrace God again?
At The Scent of Water is another compelling book by author Linda Nichols. She brings the reader into the story and walks us through to the last heart-thumping scene.
At The Scent of Water took a little bit for me to get ‘into’, but once there I was cheering for Annie and Sam, hoping their listless lives would once again find purpose and direction – wanting it of course to be together!
Dramatic and sensitive, with strong characters At The Scent of Water is a must keep.
