Soul Deep is the latest instalment in Lora Leigh’s Breeds multi-series series (Feline Breeds, Wolf Breeds) and it introduces a new kind of Breed main character.
These are dangerous times for the Breeds and their supporters. Breed Law, meant to ensure the rights of the genetically-altered Breeds people, is scheduled for a senate vote. Radical racial purists are out to stop this from happening and Coyote Breed Kiowa is asked to protect the President’s daughter Amanda Marion. When she is attacked, Kiowa comes to her rescue. He is unable to resist his attraction to her and a fateful kiss triggers his mating hormones. Coyotes are the most hated of the Breeds, and Kiowa is unsure that a reject mongrel can capture the heart of the President’s daughter.
While not the best book out of all the Breeds books, Soul Deep certainly fits well into the series and it advances an important part of the overall series story. I think I would have liked a little more suspense and action in the later part of the book, as the majority of this happens only at the beginning.
The book mainly focuses on Kiowa and Amanda’s relationship and how they adjust and deal with the powerful attraction between them. Kiowa is frustrated he may not be good enough for Amanda because he is a Breed and an unwanted child. Amanda just wants to be a normal person with a normal life, and this mating does not fit into that mould. I liked both characters and their story, but I did feel that there wasn’t enough reason for Amanda to fall in love with Kiowa. They don’t spend time getting to know each other – most of their interaction happens while they are having very hot sex.
If you’ve become hooked on the Breeds series, you won’t be disappointed by this book. If you haven’t read any of this series yet, I suggest you start.
