SAFE PASTURE by DONNA CHAPMAN GILBERT

“Love, loss and discovery in the rugged Big Horn Mountains.”

Susanna Parkers boss is under investigation by the FDIC. When his office is closed Susanna is out of a job.

It’s not long before she and her son Rusty are invited by an Aunt to visit the farm for the summer. Susanna immediately accepts the offer and sub-lets her town-house, packs up and soon mom and son are on their way. But once in the ‘back waters’ reality hits and when Susanna has to wonder if the area is civilized enough to have a 911 service, she wonders if she made the right choice.

Susanna’s aunt is very involved in church and her faith is very evident in everything she does. Susanna is a Christian, just not a fanatic. She volunteers to bring Rusty to the church Trailblazers group and help with the kids. Susanna’s job is to pass out cookies, but it’s clear the Lord had another thing in mind for her. As she listens to the bible story Susanna’s heart swells. Is her faith real? Strong enough? How can she know for sure?

Susanna takes a job as a cook at a ranch. As she watches her boss, Zeke McCall work with the others and his young daughter, he catches her heart. God has something special in store for both of them. It is a joy to follow their journey.

Ms. Gilbert’s work reads smoothly and captures our attention from the first page. We cheer for Susanna and wonder how on earth things are going to work for her. Well, of course it is no ‘earthly’ answer, it is heavenly inspired. I enjoyed watching her faith evolve as much or more than her relationship with Zeke. A sure sign the plot is tight and the story-telling sure.

A gentle romance with a message of hope – Gentle Pastures is highly recommended.
