Sara Elliott becomes a mother to her three half siblings when her mother has a stroke and her step-father disappears. Raising a teen, a tween, and a ten-year old proves to be difficult. The stakes are raised when their twenty-year old misfit brother returns to the fold.
Sara was headed for medical school when her mother became ill. Proving responsible, she returns home to take her place as head of the family. Her attempts to love and care for young Abby, Carrie, and Doug are successful. She meets Reuben and falls in love.
Reuben Lister, a real estate developer, is captivated by young Sara. He keeps his private life from her and only reveals his secret when forced to. His need for a family causes him to embrace the whole brood.
Judith Michael draws a realistic picture of the balancing act of motherhood. Sara is torn by the need for a life of her own and the need to care for the children. The biological mother Tess cannot care for the family, so a real day-to-day mother must. Sara proves to be the right one for the job.
Despite some unusual writing techniques which distract a reader, the story is one full of life and hope.
