THE PROMISE OF PEACE by Carol Umberger

It’s June 1306, six years after the Scottish victory of Stirling and brothers Ian and Angus McNab follow the Prince of Wales after defeating Robert the Bruce. Neither brother can stomach the criminal behavior of the Prince and his knights as they slaughter innocent children and villagers. And, in the time of this incident, the lives of the two brothers – and their families, are forever changed.

At a young age, Keifer McNab is sent to Adam and Gwyneth’s house as a foster son. He is a troubled and has vowed never to marry so he can be completely dedicated to being Laird of his clan when he is able. But the foster parent’s young daughter, Nola has decided she loves Keifer and they WILL marry one day.

In the meantime, another – Will MacPherson is chosen for the spirited and determined Nola but not before Keifer and Nola promise to seek each other before any final promises. When Keifer trains for knighthood, Will is introduced and Nola plays some emotional games that may be more costly than she intended. But, when Keifer is assigned to guard on a trip to Paris, Nola joins the delegation. It is here their love blooms – but how will this new development impact Kiefers plans? And, what about Will MacPherson? He’s not one to go down without a fight.

The story is like the previous three books, a feast of history – fact mixed with fiction – bringing us a living, breathing, totally captivating tale of Knights, Lairds, love and romance. Nola’s attempts at wooing Keifer is touching, humors and we find ourselves cheering for her, as she develops different methods! And the conflict Keifers feels is evident and heartbreaking.
The Promise of Peace is a good ending to a wonderful series. I certainly will be looking forward to more from this talented author.
