| Wings
of Love is a contemporary romance novel by author Jewel Stone. At the center of the
story is a mysterious romance author whose identity is closely guarded and a driven
journalist sent to uncover the mystery. The irony of this is that the journalist is
the estranged husband of the author who has no idea his missing wife has embarked on a
successful career after disappearing from their New York society life. Abigail Hanover left her
husband after feeling invisible in his life, taking second seat to his career.
Although she loves her husband, she wants to find her own way in the world, out from under
the shelter first of parents, then of her husband. She moves to the remote mountains
in Washington where, three years after leaving her husband, she finds him bleeding to
death on her doorstep after an accident in a snowstorm. She takes him in, nurses him
back to health and the two spend the next three weeks reacquainting themselves.
They
reestablish that they love each other but now have the obstacle of distance to overcome.
When she discovers that he was on the trail of a story to find the elusive author,
she is once again disappointed in a husband more interested in his career than his wife.
Wings of Love follows this couple as they struggle against career choices and their
love for each other, searching for what is important in life.
Ms. Stone has a writing style similar to Julie Garwood in that she has several point of
view changes, and the attraction between Abigail and her husband tends toward breathless
and dizzy much like Ms. Garwood writes. However, the point of view changes were
sometimes abrupt, and the scenes of intimacy between the two main characters seemed a
little forced at times. On a technical note, Ms. Stone's
sentence structure made several parts of the story difficult to read.
For people who enjoy a series romance style, the plot is familiar and the characters
likable, wrapping up to a satisfying conclusion.
