Counselor Lydia
Porter’s been lonely for a long time. She believes that her fiancé and
colleague Charlie Staines was sent to her by God. She also loves her job
at Shadrach High School. She is very good with the kids and bonds with a
troubled student, Shelby Tatum, one of Shadrachs’ star soccer players.
Shelby lets her counselor in on a secret Lydia wishes she’d never heard.
Charlie Staines is
pretty happy at his relatively new job at Shadrach high. And, he is
engaged to the loveliest lady he’s ever met. They are a perfect match.
When an accusation is leveled against Charlie he’s not only devastated,
but torn by Lydia’s reaction.
Shelby Tatum has a
secret. A secret involving sexual abuse. And the secret is killing her.
When she finally makes the decision to tell someone she chooses Lydia
Porter. Soon, the ramifications of the secret and the telling of the
secret hit all those involved in different ways.
Only God can fix the
pain and hurt in the people involved. And, He can only fix things IF
no-one turns away from Him.
No matter which way
anyone turns the outcome will change someone’s life forever.
Deborah Bedford has
a gift of bringing our relationship with God into relationships with
others. This is how life really is, one life touches another and the
results can either be overwhelmingly positive or depressingly negative.
In When You Believe
she uses a subject matter that hurts just to say what it is, sexual
abuse, and explores the depths of the souls of people involved. The
story is real, painful, and liberating as the people find freedom in
truth and in the Lord.
I highly recommend
When You Believe, and you might want to pick up a copy for your church
library or youth group. It is a book for all ages, and would make an
excellent Book Group selection.
