VENICE is the third book in the "Richard and Rose
Series" and is set in Venice, Italy. Like the previous two books, there is danger and
suspense combined with romance.
Rose Golightly is now Lady Strang, Viscountess of Southwood. Although still not used to
the elaborate dress and manners of high society, she finds encouragement from Richard's
support and his acceptance of her just as she is.
Richard, Lord Strang, regains the ability to express his emotions through his love for
Rose and can no longer be called "The Iceberg."
I was touched by the description of Rose's last day in her childhood room and her memories
of growing up there. It sharply emphasized the differences between Richard and Rose in
their status and lifestyles. Her nervousness about her upcoming marriage and her
persistent doubts about the future made her even more likeable and genuine. Just when
Richard and Rose are beginning their married life, an evil threat intervenes and they must
part for a time to ensure Rose's safety. They travel separately to Venice where they
encounter a couple impersonating them-and find that their lives are still in danger from
assassins.
I read this book in one sitting-once I started it, I couldn't put it down. The suspense of
knowing that someone was trying to kill Richard, and perhaps Rose, too, kept me turning
pages, eager to find out the culprit's identity-and the punishment Richard would mete out
to him. I enjoyed Connolly's vivid and well-researched descriptions of the art and
architecture of Venice and the scenes of card playing. Connolly's expert use of sense
images made me feel I was present with Richard and Rose in Venice. The secondary
characters Cartier and Nichols were well developed and interesting. Their loyalty to their
employer and their resourcefulness in serving him were portrayed admirably. I must admit I
skipped several of the more explicit sexual passages (there were more in this book than
the previous two in the series) and I was disappointed in Rose's willingness to
participate in violence. The previous books in this series are YORKSHIRE and DEVONSHIRE.Reviewed by Marie DisBrow for The Road to Romance
