TWILIGHT IN BABYLON by Suzanne Frank

Suzanne Frank’s “Twilight in Babylon” continues the historical time-travel romance series with Chloe and Cheftu.

Due to a horrific fire in their Jerusalem home, Cheftu discovers his wife Chloe’s body burned and almost lifeless. In a desperate effort to save her, he cradles her in his arms and races to the tunnels beneath the Temple Mount.  Here he seals Chloe and himself inside the catacombs. Lying his bride’s body beneath the familiar healing blue flame, Cheftu prays until her body melts into clay…

Lost in history and suffering amnesia, Chloe Kingsley finds herself as a marsh girl and the sole survivor of a devastating Sumerian flood.  Dazed and confused, she travels to Ur where she is welcomed.

Ur is a man’s world and Chloe finds herself rebelling against it. Managing to enroll in an all male school (something unheard of until she shows up), Chloe comes up against rejection and hatred from her male colleagues. Despite their taunts that she should be pregnant and barefoot, she studies tirelessly because somewhere deep in her brain she knows if she learns to write, she can read and then anything is possible. During her stay at Ur, fragments of another time, another world begin to slip into her everyday life.

Dreams soon haunt her. Dreams of a handsome golden eyed God named Cheftu…Is he a vision? Or is he a memory? When Chloe meets a strange woman known as the “Crone of Ninhursag” (the crone to the Goddess of Earth), all the pieces begin to fall together.

Searching for his lovely Chloe, Cheftu manages to travel back thru time and ends up in Ur where he quickly discovers himself in the body of another man, the Priest of Fertility.

Many women throw themselves at Cheftu. This new body he lives inside craves their flesh, but his heart wants only one, the green-eyed woman named Chloe…

Although the hero and heroine remain separated until a quarter of the way into the book, the story is well-written and gives the reader some rich historical detail, many colorful characters and a satisfying romance in Suzanne Frank’s “Twilight in Babylon”.

A word of caution: For readers who are not familiar with Suzanne Frank’s time-travel romance series with Chloe and Cheftu, don’t read this one unless you have read the others for you may become quickly lost. Start with “Reflections in the Nile” where it all begins. In “Reflections of the Nile” Chloe travels back in time to Egypt where she first meets Cheftu.
