THE HEARTBREAKER

Carly Phillips

Warner Contemporary Romance

August 2003

ISBN: 0-446-51152-8

As readers now by now, the younger two Chandler brothers have met their match and are happily married. And finally, their elder brother, Chase Chandler, who’d practically brought them up after their father’s demise, is now completely free to lead his own life. In his personal life, Chase wants to remain footloose and fancy-free, while professionally this newspaperman longs to break out of small-town coverage and get into the nationals, which is why he’s come to DC to cover Senator Carlisle’s bid for vice-president. And on his very first night out there, this hardcore bachelor meets a sexy redhead who rocks his world. Sloane Carlisle, Senator Carlisle’s ever-so proper daughter, is the sexy redhead in question. She’s just had some devastating news and this woman in pain behaves completely out of character that night with Chase, knowing that she’ll probably never see him again.

But that doesn’t prove to be the case! On a quest for truth, Sloane goes to the Chandlers’ hometown of Yorkshire Falls and before you know it, she’s running away from an exploding house, straight into Chase’s arms! Now Chase is a man who knows when a secret is being is kept from him and no woman has intrigued him as much as his lady of the night has. So, he decides to stick close to her, even as he wonders about Sloane’s obsession to the find the town’s most eccentric and anti-social resident, Samson. Meanwhile Raina, the Chandler matriarch, is delighted to find her eldest son enamored with this beautiful woman and she hopes to hear wedding bells again! Chase is definitely interested in Sloane, but is it just journalist fervor or has this ‘heartbreaker’ finally bowed before Cupid? Sloane is also falling for Chase, but she’s a woman on a mission and she won’t be deterred….or will she?

This last book in the Chandler trilogy by Carly Phillips, has a lot more emotionality to it, than the previous two books. And in nature too, it is a bit more serious than the other books. This is mainly because of the temperament of this particular story. Chase was always the most serious and responsible one among the Chandler brothers, and naturally, Ms. Phillips has created an equally strong and determined woman for him. They’re both people with deep feelings and wary of getting hurt. Naturally, they don’t open up to each other and this creates some misunderstandings and problems for them. And this is despite the fact that they fairly make the pages sizzle with their passion. Character development is deeper in this book and the story has a poignancy to it that is impressive. Plot twists, danger and misunderstanding add spice to this story and make it even more interesting. This story is a most satisfactory conclusion to this exciting trilogy and makes for a very enjoyable read!
