THE BIG BOUNCE by Elmore Leonard

Note: THE BIG BOUNCE was originally released in 1969. The first HarperTorch printing was February 2003. The original version was also a film in 1969. A remake of this film is to be released early 2004.

Jack Ryan has always been a small time crook - a couple of minor break-ins, brief stints in jail. But, when Nancy Hayes enters his life, things change. Nancy is a risk-taker. Everything she does increases in intensity. When Nancy tells Ryan of an idea for a crime with a big pay-off, he decides to go in with her.

Nancy has spent most of her life creating mischief, from small things to anything that will give her a thrill. When she spots Ryan, she’s sure he’s the one to help her pull off a job she’s been planning.

Ryan doesn’t know what it is about Nancy that intrigues him. At first he’s disgusted with her, for being a rich man’s plaything. She is living in this rich man’s summer home, but makes herself available to anyone else that crosses her path, including Ryan. Nancy sends a certain thrill through Ryan, and even though he knows of her propensity towards violence, he is still drawn to her.

THE BIG BOUNCE is a pleasant read. It is hard to put this book down, because you never know what Nancy will do next. The chances she takes while seeking thrills is sure to captivate the reader. Will she get caught, or just get bolder? Ryan’s character is interesting to watch as well. He only wanted to be a baseball player, but due to injury, his career was washed down the toilet. After a particularly violent crime, he knew it was time to quit and he was tired of making mistakes. Watching Nancy control him, and even a couple of buddies from his past, was a good peek into the inner workings of his mind.

I’ve never read Mr. Leonard before, but his easy style made this book enjoyable to read.
