New Christian Nettie Franklin is out to make her town – Mesquite, Nebraska, dry. As in - no alcohol. Only thing standing in her way is a saloon, some bigger than life cowpokes, a judge who makes a living off evil brew, and Nettie Franklin, herself.
Nettie begins her vendetta by committing an assault (of sorts) in the local saloon. She feels good about the action until she winds up in one of the towns two jail cells.
Nettie’s best friend is the Judge’s wife who immediately begins to work a way to get Nettie out of prison. In the meantime the judge isn’t budging on his decision and Nettie faces a long term behind bars.
Riley O’Conner has a shameful past, but he’s committed his life to the Lord and has returned to Mesquite to pay thanks to the man who led him to the Lord and out of the miserable lifestyle he’d developed. Only problem is Riley was warned that if he ever, EVER, stepped back into town, he’d end up in jail.
Let it not be said that the judge doesn’t keep his word.
Initially Nettie stays as far from Riley as her cell will allow. She remembers his former way and it takes some frank conversations to figure out what has changed about the man. It is good news indeed.
Still, life behind bars is not the style Nettie wants to become accustomed to.
And, then, a solution is presented to them. If Nettie and Riley marry one another the judge will let them out of prison. Neither Nettie nor Riley pray about the solution, they both eagerly jump at the chance to be free. Besides, the judge’s wife says they can get it annulled after sufficient time has passed.
Once the couple is released the idea of annulment is presented to the judge who refuses to do it. Nettie realizes she’s a permanent wife with a permanent husband. Trouble comes when Riley has to return to his Montana ranch while Nettie still has her home in Mesquite.
Are the couple’s troubles only temporary? Will they find a way to compromise and follow God’s plan or will they, again, work within the confines of man’s laws and figure a way out?
As usual, DiAnn Mills does not disappoint. This master story teller uses totally believable characters and creative authentic settings. Be prepared for suspense, mystery, humor and touching moments. The slim book is perfect for the indulgent afternoon or stormy evening read.
