A SURPRISE FOR ABIGAIL is book one in a three book series set in the Catskill Mountains of New York about three cousins who would do anything to please their “sick” aunt, even falling in love.
Drifter Cole Stanton got a bit too drunk in a Surprise, New York, saloon and ended up thrown into jail. The next morning he’s stunned to learn the sheriff is a woman who doesn’t even carry a gun. He can’t help but wonder who the sheriff really is though, because everything this sheriff does is overruled by town matriarch, Aunt Margaret, an elderly, wheelchair bound woman, who wants people to believe she’s dying.
Abigail Monroe came to Surprise only a month earlier and to her shock was named Sheriff even though there wasn’t an election and she has no previous experience in law enforcement. The town is quiet though with the occasional drunk the only thing to liven it up. At least that’s the case until a stack of wanted posters comes to town—and Cole’s picture is on top of the pile!
When Aunt Margaret sends out ads to newspapers stating what a wonderful, quiet, crime-free town Surprise is, population booms. Cole is allowed out of jail to help the local builder for a few hours every day. But who is this Wanda McGurdy who came to town with the last train and is now actively pursuing Cole? Why does her presence bother Abigail so much? What other surprises will the town of Surprise hold?
A SURPRISE FOR ABIGAIL is a truly sweet story, sure to keep the readers attention. The characters are well developed and easy to fall in love with. At first I didn’t know whether the story was historical or contemporary and I never would have guessed it was set in New York, so the setting isn’t that well developed. There are some unrealistic things that happen in the story, but overall it’s a good read.
