SILENT STAR by Tracie Peterson

What could be worse than receiving one of ‘those’ telegrams during WWII? You’ve heard of the telegrams, there were usually two. One to say that your loved one is injured, missing, etc. and the next one fells the final blow: your loved one is dead. What could be worse than receiving one of the dreaded missives? How about being the one to deliver them? Family after family, day in, day out - is the life of Andy Gilbert. Andy is the sole survivor of an auto accident that killed his parents and left him maimed. Because of his injury, Andy is excused from the armed services and instead he takes the job delivering telegrams.

There is a lot of superstition in Andy’s town, Haven Pennsylvania. Soon, town folks shun the young bachelor. They seem to feel if they don’t have contact with him, he will not deliver the deadly telegram. Andy sinks into depression and finds comfort in visiting his parent’s graves.

Estella Nelson is an elderly widow who is lonely and depends on her faith in God, and visits to her husband’s grave for company and comfort. Here she meets a sad, lonely young man, Andy Gilbert. She begins to pray for him.

Ms. Peterson scatters little bits of stardust throughout Andy’s life, until we are almost shouting for him to open up and discover the eternal hope God offers. Where there is God, there is always hope.

SILENT STAR is a small book, written simply and easily read. It is I suppose a seasonal book, delivering gifts of love, hope, grace, and God’s mercy, between its covers. But, I will have my copy out all year long. When you buy your edition this year, buy a few extras to give to those you love, or those who seem as if something is missing in their lives.  Merry Christmas.
