ROAD TRIP - DIARY OF A TEENAGE GIRL by Melody Carlson

Chole, Allie and Laura are so excited. Their Christian band has been contracted to open on tour for the most awesome Christian Band ever – Iron Cross. Each girl handles the excitement in her own way. All of it is recorded in Chloe’s journal, which is the book – Road Trip.

While Allie seems to be obsessed with their ‘stardom’ and continually drops hints to others, that the three are famous singers,  the other girls remember, Allie has some special issues. Her mother and younger brother travel on the bus with the band. This is a good thing, but Allie is so hyperactive sometimes she drives everyone else nuts. Allie does have attention problems and has a prescription medication to help her calm down, but Allie wants to handle her problems naturally with self-control.

Laura is the steadfast member. She is serious and hardworking. She and Chole are closest members of the band. When Chole notices Laura is acting different from usual, somewhat stressed they discuss the situation and Laura decides to call her mom and ask for help. Laura doesn’t like to spend time away from home and this trip is making her homesick and anxious. After talking with her mom  a bottle of pills comes in the mail for Laura.

Chloe’s been a bit of a rebel before, but after making a decision to give her life to Christ, she’s serious about serving Him. She is worried about her friends and worried that the band will not be able to fulfill its contract with not only the recording company, but with God. She wants the band to be used by Him. Besides, the band members of Iron Cross are really hot and she likes them probably way too much.

Tension increases when Laura begins talking the pills, and Allie’s pills start disappearing. How can they handle the pressures of the road and maintain a ‘normal’ lifestyle, when their new reality is anything but normal? Only God could make this group a useful tool for His work.

ROAD TRIP is a must read for any teen who is interested in the culture of bands and discovering maybe a different way of serving the Lord. Written as entries in a young girl’s diary, Road Trip is a fun adventure into the young woman’s life. If you’ve ever wondered what this ‘glamorous’ lifestyle would be like, Road Trip is going to please you.
