Callie McGregor along with friends and family has
arrived in what Callie's young daughter, Rose, calls the Promiseland. Grassy pains,
towering mountains, and forests so thick you cant see them for the trees, has the
group anxious for their new lives. Callie almost cant believe God has delivered them
through so much peril and misfortune to this beautiful place. Will it be safe? Can they
actually make a living in this place? Is this truly where the Lord has lead them?
Theyve trusted Him so far, and arent going to stop now.
Callie, husband Quinn, and daughter Rose are the hub of this quirky group once all
strangers, now called a family. Only God could have such a group get along so very well.
The family is composed of Callie and her husband, Quinn, their son Patrick and daughter
Rose. Callies brother Jack is with them, along with his new wife, Lillie, and his
son from his first marriage to Blackfoot Indian, Raven. Jack once ran wild and Callie
wondered if the family would ever see him again. Their mother used to say,
Jacks got good in him Callie. He just doesnt believe it yet. Thats
what the good Lord puts families together for, to believe in each other when we cant
believe in ourselves. She was right. And, that could be the theme for the book:
Gods providence to families.
But, Promiseland isnt a simple tale of love and family. In their attempt to make a
new life in the somewhat unsettled and unwelcoming land, the battle continues with forces
against them ranging from a blacksmith whose heart is as black as the anvil he hammers, to
a cluster of good town women who cruelly hold themselves above all else,
judging everyone else by their rigid, unforgiving standards.
Pride, jealousy, selfishness, and anger all must take second seat to this group who are
determined to see Gods will done. Its no easy task to orchestrate these folks
into a loving, manageable and contributing source. But, Callie is determined to do so with
Gods help.
In addition to the great story in Promiseland, we get a glimpse of frontier life and
rugged, strong, Godly people who fought to survive in a new land.
Author Dawn Miller writes with conviction and common sense. Promiseland reads like a
cherished family journal. One that beacons to be saved and read repeatedly, with each read
turning over a new gem. Best of all, Promiseland is only Book 1 in the Callie McGregor
series.
Its been awhile since Ive picked up a book that held my close attention from
interesting first page to satisfying last page. The way the book is presented adds
authenticity to this work of fiction. A charming cover and ragged edged pages makes
Promiseland a treasure to keep on your shelf.
Anyone who is a fan of American or womans history - if you like good writing, strong
plots and believable characters who become like friends I highly recommend
Promiseland.
