PLAYING HOUSE by Patricia Pearson

Even in one of New York City’s tiny apartments, there’s enough room for a person to get into trouble . . .

When Frannie Mackenzie got sick all over the sweater section of a major department store, she couldn’t quite believe it was a reaction to gray being this year’s black. After spending a fortune buying sweaters she’ll never wear, Frannie goes back to her apartment to figure things out. All the signs point to pregnancy—the final proof is when the stick turns blue.

After discussing the matter with her friends, Frannie decides she’s going to give up cocktails and anything else that might be bad for the baby. When she goes home to visit her family in Canada and break the news, Frannie is stunned when she tries to come back into America. They won’t let her in! She argues that her job is in New York, her apartment is in New York and that she’s pregnant. No matter to the border officials. Her visa has expired and that’s the final word. She has to start working through overwhelming amounts of red tape.

Frannie’s mother is stunned that Frannie hasn’t told her boyfriend, Calvin Puddie, that’s he’s going to be a father. But the experimental jazz musician has gone off to Europe on tour. Not to mention he and Frannie barely know each other. How does one tell a man she hardly knows that they’re being united by parenthood? And what will Calvin do when he finds out?

PLAYING HOUSE is a delightfully funny story. Any woman who has ever experienced pregnancy will instantly relate with Frannie. The humor in this story is outstanding, and I laughed out loud several times in reading this book. I even shared parts of it with my husband.

Ms. Pearson’s writing talent clearly shows in PLAYING HOUSE and I look forward to reading many more books by this author. There is some language the reader will need to be aware of., Over-all, reading PLAYING HOUSE is a pleasure. I couldn’t put the book down. Pick it up today!
