Jolene Hadley Corbett hates change. She lives in
Verbena, North Carolina, a small town which boasts an auto museum, a mayor who swears
hes related to Andy Griffith, the Every Second Saturday Flea Market and
Jamboree and The Feud. Of these, The Feud is the event that
has caused the most gossip and speculation to pass between the lips of those living in
Verbena. Its been
going on for generations the Hadleys and the OMalleys have been holding on to
this old grudge for as long as anyone can remember.
When Howard OMalley, the oldest of the OMalley clan passes away, his grandson,
Ryman, comes back into town to take possession of the South Winds Trav O
Tel. Jolene finds herself face to face with the man shes lusted after for
twenty years, ever since he accidentally pulled off her bathing suit top while trying to
rescue her from drowning in his grandfathers pool. When she realizes that Ryman is
planning on tearing down the South Winds, Jolene vows to fight him every step of the way.
She can't simply let such a large symbol of her childhood be demolished! Struggling to
make sense of the changes going on within herself as she fights her growing feelings for
"the enemy" isnt easy, and Jolene finds that changing her way of thinking
may be the only way to stay grounded during this trying time.
Annie Flannigan has taken the famous Romeo and Juliet theme and given it a new
twist. As two members of rivaling families fall for each other, the old feuds of the past
and the grudges that have been as habitual as the Saturday Flea Market also begin to
crumble.
Told from Jolenes first person perspective, LOVE AND A BAD HAIR DAY is quite
different from most other romance novels. The reader is unable to get Rymans point
of view on the changes hes going through along with Jolene, but Jolenes own
witty remarks and insights more than make up for that.
LOVE AND A BAD HAIR DAY is fairly slow-paced, but it is a story that encourages change,
and change comes gradually. Its a heartwarming tale of family, love, friendship and
trust.
