A horrific accident ties Catherine Gaillard to her
childhood home on the Mountain. Cat is given the chance to live with grandparents
who lived off the mountain, and who would give her a better life than family on the
Mountain. But, Cat cant make herself move. Fear holds her fast to the Mountain.
Eventually, Cat goes to college and meets Joe, who becomes her husband. Eventually they
have a daughter. Circumstance regarding this situation furthers Cats resolve to stay
in the safe confines of the Mountain.
Cat enters therapy to cope with the gripping fear of leaving the Mountain. She wants to go
down below and experience life as she imagines it. But, she cannot leave. Anxiety attacks
and physical illness assault Cat the few times shes attempted to go down.
Finally, Cat is able to relinquish the Mountain and she and Joe take a trip to Italy,
where they tour and have a life altering time. And, then, a situation arises that could
make Cat happy or ruin her life. Will she make the correct choice?
The story in Italy is the meat of the book. Characters met and situations conquered are
touching and poignant. But nothing is like the emotion packed ending.
Anne Rivers Siddons books are events. Sweeping sagas with bleeding characters and
passionate circumstances. Heart-wrenching and soul stirring are the best ways to describe
her novels.
